Mexico
Two companies brew almost all of Mexico’s beer: Grupo Modelo, owned by AB InBev, with Corona, Modelo and Victoria, and Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, owned by Heineken, with Tecate, Dos Equis and Sol. By value, Mexico exports more beer than any other country. The amber and dark lagers that immigrant brewers brought in the 19th century survive as the country’s Vienna lagers, and the BA now writes guidelines for the Mexican-style lagers. Craft brewing grew up along the border with California, at Cucapá, Insurgente, Aguamala and Wendlandt. Mexican beer today tells the story.
