Cervecería Mexicali

Miguel González Quiroz, a customs agent and beer trader, founded Cervecería Mexicali on 12 March 1923 with the Canadian brewer Albert Bindher and others, using a brewery brought from Canada. It opened on 4 July 1923 as the first brewery in north-west Mexico, while US Prohibition drew drinkers across the border to Mexicali and Tijuana. During the Second World War it brewed 6,000 barrels a month with 120 staff and held up to 90% of its regional market. It closed in 1973. In 2003 its building was listed for its historic value. The Mexicali brand passed to other brewers and since 2016 has belonged to Grupo Modelo.
