Cervecería Aguamala
The marine biologist Nathaniel Schmidt, his wife Ashley and their partner Tomás Fernández founded Aguamala in Ensenada in September 2005; the name, Spanish for jellyfish, came up on a fishing trip. Its first core beer, Marea Roja, grew out of a home-brewed amber ale. Production moved to shipping containers at El Sauzal by 2011. In 2014 Aguamala won what was reported as the first World Beer Cup medal for a Baja California brewery, and in 2020 it was the Copa Cervecera del Pacífico’s brewery of the year. Marea Roja is now a red IPA, Astillero an imperial IPA, Mantarraya an oatmeal stout and Mantis a wit.
