Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma (HEINEKEN México)

The Fábrica de Hielo y Cerveza Cuauhtémoc was founded in Monterrey in 1890 and launched Carta Blanca that year. Its owners built a group around it, from glass bottles to malt, and founded the Tecnológico de Monterrey in 1943. It bought Tecate in 1954 and in 1985 absorbed Cervecería Moctezuma of Orizaba, founded by the German brewer Wilhelm Hasse, with XX, Sol and Noche Buena. Heineken bought the business from FEMSA in 2010, and FEMSA sold the last of the Heineken shares it took in exchange in May 2025. HEINEKEN México runs seven breweries and holds about 40% of the market. It calls Dos Equis Ambar, Bohemia Viena and Indio Vienna lagers, the trace of the style that 19th-century immigrant brewers brought to Mexico; the BJCP files Dos Equis Amber as an international amber lager. An eighth brewery planned at Kanasín, Yucatán, still had no start date in May 2026, as environmental groups questioned its effect on the region’s aquifer.
