France

Northern France shares its brewing with Belgian Flanders: the bière de garde, brewed around Lille and kept in cold cellars for warmer weather, is the region’s own style. Alsace, on the German border, took up lager early, when Louis Schutzenberger brought bottom fermentation from Munich in 1847; Kronenbourg and Meteor still brew there. The trade body Brasseurs de France counts about 2,500 breweries across the country.
