An IPA Argenta pours medium gold to medium reddish copper, sometimes with an orange tint, clear unless dry-hopped or brewed with unmalted wheat, under a good, persistent head. It tastes of the Argentine hop: pink grapefruit and tangerine peel lead, sometimes with orange blossom, herbs or resin. A medium to medium-high bitterness rests on clean malt, and the finish is dry and refreshing. Strength runs at 5–6.5%.
Where it comes from
Argentine brewers defined it in 2013 at meetings of the Somos Cerveceros association. The idea was a witbier’s pairing of citrus and wheat: up to 15% wheat, malted or not, with Argentine-grown hops such as Cascade, Mapuche and Nugget and a clean American yeast. The BJCP lists it as local style X2 and would place it with the IPAs; Antares and Kerze brew examples.
Next to its neighbours
It has the frame of an American IPA, but the hop character must come from Argentine varieties, with citrus in front.
