Steam Whistle Brewing

Greg Cromwell, Greg Taylor and Cam Heaps, laid off when Upper Canada Brewing was taken over, planned a one-beer brewery on a camping trip and called themselves the three fired guys. Steam Whistle opened in 2000 in the John Street Roundhouse, a 1929 Canadian Pacific locomotive shop at the foot of the CN Tower and a National Historic Site. Its Pilsner, a Czech-style pilsner with Saaz hops, is the beer; the brewery tried others from 2019 and dropped them in 2022. It bought Beau’s in 2022. Most of its beer now sells in cans, but it keeps its green 1940s-style bottle.
