Ölgerðin Egill Skallagrímsson
Tómas Tómasson founded Ölgerðin in two basement rooms in Reykjavík on 17 April 1913. Iceland banned alcohol from 1915 and kept beer over 2.25% illegal until 1 March 1989, so for decades the brewery’s beer was the weak Egils Pilsner, apart from Polar Ale for the British occupying force in the war and Polar Beer for the US base at Keflavík. Since 1989 its main beer has been Egils Gull, and Bríó is a German-style pilsner. It also runs the craft brewery Borg Brugghús, founded in 2010, whose numbered beers include a witbier.
