Iceland banned alcohol in 1915 and kept strong beer, over 2.25%, illegal until 1 March 1989, a date the country now marks as Beer Day. Ölgerðin, founded in Reykjavík in 1913, brewed weak beer through the ban and now runs the craft brewery Borg Brugghús.
