Mahou-San Miguel
Hijos de Casimiro Mahou was set up in Madrid in 1890 to make beer and ice. Mahou bought the 70% of San Miguel it did not already own from Danone in 2000, forming Spain’s largest beer group, and went on to buy Reina of Tenerife and Alhambra of Granada. In the United States it now owns all of Founders and Avery. The Mahou family still controls it. Mahou Cinco Estrellas, launched in 1969, is a golden pale lager of 5.5% brewed with barley malt and maize, legally a cerveza especial. Cerveceros de España puts the group’s Spanish output in 2025 at 12.7 million hectolitres.
