San Miguel (Spain)

The San Miguel name comes from a brewery opened in Manila in 1890, when the Philippines were Spanish. The Spanish company is a separate business: founded as La Segarra in Lleida province in 1946 or 1947 (the sources differ), it began brewing in 1953 and took the San Miguel name under a 1957 agreement with the Philippine brewer. It opened a brewery in Málaga in 1966 and bought Heineken’s Gulder brewery in Burgos in 1969. Mahou bought it from Danone in 2000. San Miguel Especial is its premium lager; Selecta is legally a cerveza extra.
