Granville Island Brewing
Mitch Taylor founded Granville Island Brewing under the Granville Bridge in Vancouver in 1984. It calls itself Canada’s first licensed microbrewery, though Horseshoe Bay, of 1982, is usually counted as the first modern craft brewer, and it says it was the first microbrewery to can its beer, in 1993. Island Lager was its first beer, and English Bay Ale followed in 1987. Molson Coors bought it through Creemore Springs in 2009. The Granville Island site still brews small batches, among them Brockton, a West Coast IPA, and Triple Eh, an American amber ale; most of the volume comes from elsewhere in the Molson Coors network.
