Belize Brewing Company (Belikin)

Eric Bowen and his son Barry set up the Belize Brewing Company in 1969 with Honduras’s Cervecería Hondureña, and Barry Bowen bought out the Honduran shares in 1981. Belikin, whose name comes from Maya words for road to the east, is its own beer, sold as a lager, a light, a stout, a sorrel stout and a chocolate stout. Since 1989 the brewery has also brewed Guinness Foreign Extra Stout under licence. It moved to a new brewery at Ladyville in 2000. German brewmasters ran it for its first 40 years; in 2011 Nolan Michael became its first Belizean brewmaster. A taproom and visitor centre opened in 2022.
