Anheuser-Busch
The company traces back to the Bavarian Brewery that George Schneider opened in south St. Louis in 1852. The soap maker Eberhard Anheuser bought it in 1860, and his son-in-law Adolphus Busch, a German immigrant, built it into a national brewer with pasteurisation, refrigerated rail cars and bottling on a wide scale. Budweiser, launched in 1876 and named after the Bohemian town, became the first national US beer brand, and the BJCP uses it as its example of an American lager. Anheuser-Busch has been the largest US brewer since 1957. InBev took it over in 2008. A boycott of Bud Light from April 2023 cost the brand its place as the best-selling US beer, and Michelob Ultra, another Anheuser-Busch beer, took the top spot in 2025. The company sold eight craft brands to Tilray in 2023 and kept Goose Island and Wicked Weed.
