Birrificio Montegioco

Riccardo Franzosi turned an old warehouse at Montegioco, in the Val Grue near Tortona, into a brewery in 2005. He brews with local produce: Timorasso grape must in Tibir, Barbera, now Croatina, grapes in Open Mind, Volpedo peaches in Quarta Runa and Garbagna cherries in Garbagnina. The BJCP credits Montegioco and Barley with first brewing the Italian Grape Ale in 2006-2007 and lists Open Mind as a classic example. Every winter since 2008 the brewery has held a festival, Le Birre della Merla.
