Greene King
Benjamin Greene founded the brewery in Bury St Edmunds in 1799, and it merged with Frederick William King’s business in 1887. It grew by buying other brewers, among them Morland, Ridley’s, Belhaven and Hardys & Hansons, which earned it the nickname “Greedy King”, and brews several closed breweries’ brands, such as Old Speckled Hen, in Bury. Hong Kong’s CK Asset Holdings bought the company in 2019, and a new 40 million pound brewery is due in 2027. The BJCP lists Greene King IPA as an ordinary bitter, XX Mild as a dark mild and Strong Suffolk Ale as an old ale.
