Commonwealth Brewery (Kalik)
Heineken and a Bahamian distiller agreed in 1983 to found Commonwealth Brewery, and the government gave it an exclusive licence to brew in 1984. The brewery at Clifton Pier, New Providence, filled its first bottle, a Heineken, in 1987, brewing only Heineken and Guinness at first. Kalik, which Heineken designed in 1988 as the beer of the Bahamas and named after the sound of Junkanoo cowbells, is a lager of 5%. Heineken bought out its partners in 2010 and floated a quarter of the shares on the Bahamas stock exchange in 2011. The brewery also makes Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.
