Carib Brewery

Sir Gerald Wight founded the Caribbean Development Company in 1947 as a brewery and glassworks, to reduce Trinidad’s dependence on sugar and oil, and the first Carib lager reached the market in September 1950. In 1957 Carib bought the Trinidad Brewing Company of Richard C. Walters, maker of Royal Extra Stout, a beer dating from about 1908 and called the oldest beer brand in the Caribbean; the BJCP lists it as an example of the tropical stout. Carib is a lager of 5% and Stag one of 5.2%. Carib also bottles Guinness Foreign Extra Stout under an agreement with Diageo, and the ANSA McAL group owns it.
