Theakston

Robert Theakston and John Wood founded the business in Masham in 1827, and Theakston’s sons built the present brewery in 1875. It was taken over in 1987 and passed to Scottish & Newcastle, until in 2003 four Theakston brothers bought a majority back; it calls itself an independent family brewer again. Old Peculier, named after the Peculier of Masham, is a classic old ale, and Traditional Mild a dark mild. The brewery keeps one of the last full-time coopers in Britain.
