Schlenkerla

The house Zum blauen Löwen, below Bamberg cathedral, is first recorded in 1405, and a tavern and brewery probably opened there in 1538. Johann Wolfgang Heller bought it in 1738, and the family that still owns it took over in 1866; the nickname Schlenkerla comes from a brewmaster’s swinging gait. The Trum family runs it in the sixth generation and still taps its beer from oak casks. Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen is the classic Rauchbier.
