Propeller Brewing Company
John Allen, a film-industry prop master who home-brewed between jobs, opened Propeller in 1997 in a former cinema on Gottingen Street in Halifax. His pale ale and ESB, meant only for one bar’s taps, sold so fast that he bottled by hand in the basement. Main production moved to Windmill Road in Dartmouth in 2013, and the old site now brews small batches and houses an arcade. Its IPA, which it calls the first true IPA made locally, is its best seller, next to Galaxy IPA, a hazy IPA. In 2021 its 43 staff brewed more than 12,000 hectolitres.
