Desnoes & Geddes (Red Stripe)
Eugene Desnoes and Thomas Geddes merged their soft-drink businesses in Kingston in 1918, opened a brewery in 1927 and brewed the first Red Stripe in 1928, a heavier, darker beer than today’s. The light golden Red Stripe was first brewed in 1934. The Hunt’s Bay brewery replaced the first one in 1958. Guinness bought control in 1993, and Heineken bought Diageo’s stake in 2015. Red Stripe is a pale lager of 4.7%. Dragon Stout, first sold in the 1920s and relaunched in 1961, is one of the BJCP’s examples of the tropical stout.
