The brothers Alfonso, Sabino and Ramón Valdés Cobián founded the brewery in Mayagüez on 2 November 1937, and its first beer, India, came out in October 1938. Medalla Light came in 1980. It was the first light beer brewed in Puerto Rico, and it sells best. Magna followed in 2011, which the company calls the first premium beer made on the island, and a craft line, Del Oeste, in 2018. The Valdés family still owns and runs it: Grace Marie Valdés has led it since 2017. Medalla Light has been sold in Florida since 2018 and in 18 US states by 2023.
