Brooklyn Brewery

Steve Hindy, who learned to brew while working in the Middle East, and his neighbour Tom Potter started Brooklyn Brewery in 1988; Milton Glaser designed the logo. The beer was first brewed under contract by Matt Brewing in Utica, which still makes Brooklyn Lager and the bottled beer. In 1996 Brooklyn opened a brewery in a former matzo factory on North 11th Street in Williamsburg, and Garrett Oliver has been its brewmaster since 1994. Brooklyn Brown Ale is the BJCP’s example of an American brown ale. Kirin owns 24.5%, just under the limit for an independent craft brewer, and Carlsberg brews Brooklyn Lager under licence in Lithuania. In 2026 it planned to leave North 11th Street for a site four times larger, four blocks away.
