Brasserie Nationale d'Haïti (Prestige)
Michael Madsen, from a Danish family settled in Haiti, founded the Brasserie Nationale d’Haïti in 1973 and launched Prestige in 1976, for more than forty years the only beer of Haitian origin. Heineken bought 22.5% in 1985, and the brewery later replaced maize with cane sugar. Prestige won gold at the World Beer Cup in 2000 and 2012. The 2010 earthquake stopped brewing for six weeks. In December 2011 the Madsen family sold to Heineken, which announced US$100 million of investment and a programme for sorghum farmers. BRANA also brews Kinanm and makes Malta H and Guinness under licence.
