Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)

Jim Koch, the son of a brewer, founded the company with Rhonda Kallman in 1984. He based Samuel Adams Boston Lager on a family recipe, Louis Koch Lager, and at first had it brewed under contract in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. Boston Beer later bought breweries in Cincinnati (1997) and Breinigsville, Pennsylvania (2007), launched Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard cider, and merged with Dogfish Head in 2019. Wikipedia calls Boston Lager an amber or Vienna lager. Utopias, a barrel-aged beer first released in 2002, reached 30% alcohol in its 2025 edition. Boston Beer is the third-largest US craft brewer, and it brewed the beer of the pioneering New Albion again in 2012. In the third quarter of 2026 sales fell 3.2%, with Samuel Adams, Truly and Twisted Tea all down.
