Cervecería Anwandter
Carlos Anwandter, a German pharmacist who had studied brewing, began brewing at home in Valdivia in 1851, at first about 18 bottles a month for his family. His sons took over in 1858, and steam power and regular shipping from Corral to Valparaíso opened the markets of central and northern Chile. Output rose from 700,000 litres in 1871 to more than 25 million in 1914. The family sold a majority to CCU in 1916, and the earthquake of 22 May 1960 destroyed the brewery. Kunstmann sells a beer in the family’s memory.
