Czech brewers gave the world the pale lager. In 1842 the town of Plzeň hired the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll, and his golden beer became Pilsner Urquell. Czech labels name a beer by its colour and strength: světlý means pale, and ležák a lager of 11–12.9 °Plato.
