Uerige
The house brewery and tavern Zum Uerige stands at Berger Straße 1 in Düsseldorf’s old town. Its name goes back to Wilhelm Cürten, who took over the brewery in 1862 and was so grumpy that regulars called him uerig, bad-tempered, in dialect. The Schnitzler brewing family has run it since 1976. Its Alt is paler, spicier and more bitter than most; the BJCP lists it as a classic Altbier and as the style’s aggressively hopped exception. Twice a year it brews a stronger Sticke.
