Russian River Brewing Company
Korbel Champagne Cellars created Russian River in 1997 and hired Vinnie Cilurzo as brewmaster. He began ageing beer with Brettanomyces in local wine barrels in 1999, and when Korbel left brewing in 2002 he and his wife Natalie bought the brewery and moved it to a brewpub in downtown Santa Rosa. Cilurzo is credited with inventing the double IPA at an earlier brewery, and Pliny the Elder is the BJCP’s example of the style. Blind Pig is its American IPA, Damnation its Belgian golden strong ale, and Supplication, Temptation and Sanctification its barrel-aged wild ales. A second brewery opened in Windsor in 2018, partly to handle the crowds for Pliny the Younger, released once a year.
