Murphy's
James J. Murphy founded the Lady’s Well Brewery in Cork in 1856, and by 1906 it was Ireland’s second-largest brewer. Heineken bought it in 1983. Murphy’s Irish Stout, a dry stout of 4% alcohol, is brewed to taste less bitter than Guinness, the idea behind its “I’m not bitter” adverts of the 1990s. Murphy’s Irish Red is brewed for export.
