Cervecería Mastra

Wilfredo Camacho, an industrial engineer, tasted craft beer in Argentina in 2006, found none made in Uruguay and set up Mastra with an investor in a rented former bakery. It went on sale on 3 October 2007 with a golden ale, a Scottish ale and a stout, and calls itself the country’s first craft beer. Sales were slow until a stall at Montevideo’s Mercado Agrícola opened in 2013 and doubled them; by 2018 Mastra brewed up to 36,000 litres a month. It now brews at Las Piedras, Canelones, and keeps its office in Montevideo. The name drops the e from maestra.
