Cervecería Austral
José Fischer, a German master brewer, came to Punta Arenas in 1896 and founded what the brewery calls the southernmost in the world; his first beer sold as Patagona. The Chadwick family bought it in 1961 for its maltings group, now Maltexco, and since 2000 CCU has owned half. The brewery still stands where it was founded and houses a beer museum. CCU brews Austral Lager elsewhere in Chile and sells it nationally. The range also includes Calafate, with the Patagonian berry, and Torres del Paine, which the brewery says was named the best Helles bock at the World Beer Awards.
